My understanding of coaching

I believe it is imperative to build trust and respect in the one on one coaching relationship.

Coaching can be an over-used word and what brings it meaning and depth is the ability on both parties to share in a meaningful and productive manner.  I want time spent talking with me to feel like time well spent. I am very honest in my communication style and while being empathetic will not sugar-coat feedback where I feel you are receptive to it and it will help you to grow and achieve your goals.

The ability to listen with your head and your heart is important to me; to hear what is being said both literally and between the lines. I know how to hold a safe space that enables psychological safety, learning and growth.  I listen to the message and the sub-text that each individual is expressing and help my mentees to explore challenges they perceive in a manner that is both productive and reflective. I am also very capable of picking up your concerns when you do not always realize you are expressing them and enabling you to explore challenges that will enable personal and professional growth.

Michael Jackson sang of the “Man in the Mirror” and I am a believer in a quote from Socrates that the “Unexamined Life is not worth living.” I also happen to believe, based on my work in the field of Unconscious Bias, that “the unchallenged brain is not worth trusting.” We are all capable of socially constructing a story about our lives and gaining insights into the impact of that story allows for reflection and personal growth.  Having a sense that you are really being heard and that someone is taking the time to “get you” and to understand your goals, strengths, opportunities and weaknesses is, for me, a critical part of the coaching relationship.

Methodologies and Style

While I am classically trained in an OD approach to human behavior and can utilize Gestalt, Tavistock and Human Interaction methodologies my style is very open.

I am an effective communicator and an effective listener. I believe some problems need behavioral solutions and others need strategy and tactics; while others require that we dig deeper at an intra-personal level.

I prefer to hear and understand who you are first before developing an agreed approach that will work for both of us.

I can relate to self-esteem issues, imposter syndrome challenges, ego issues etc.  We all have them and the question is how do we manage them. I see it as my role to help you to see the person in the mirror that other people see and explore the impact that has on your professional working relationships.
